Importance of the Eiffel Tower

-

The Eiffel Tower is one of the most famous structures in the whole world. It is located in Champ de Mars in Paris, France. It is named after Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the building. This iron tower is considered the tallest building in Paris and the fifth tallest in France. It is 1,063 ft high, including its antenna measuring 79 ft.

From the time it was constructed until 1930, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest tower in the whole world. A proof of the structure’s popularity is the millions of people visiting it each year despite the admission fee.

The Eiffel Tower was intended to be one of the tallest structures in the world. This explains its extraordinary design which was for wind resistance purposes. The structure was originally built in honor of the French Revolution. It was for the World Exhibition in 1889, in time for the 100th anniversary of the revolution.

The exhibition was held to let the world know of the technological advancements in France. Although as expected, there were a number of people opposing to the construction of the tower since they believed that it would be a contradiction to the French tradition and that it would just be a form of intrusion in Europe. In fact, there were talks on its demolition in the early 1900’s but fortunately, this did not push through as they discovered its more important use.

The Eiffel tower has been a known structure in the field of science. A number of experiments were performed at the top of the tower such as pendulums, temperature, pressure, and radio transmission. But its main purpose remains until the present, which is as a radio transmitter. If it was not revealed that it could be a radio transmission tower, the Eiffel may not be around this day.

The Eiffel has lifts and stairways to get to the different levels of the tower. There are two restaurants inside it. These are located in the first and second floors. To complete the Paris experience, the restaurants serve popular French dishes. There are also observation platforms to see the great view of Paris. Then, on top of the tower is the souvenir shop, which is almost always packed with tourists. In 2000, modern lights, which fill the entire tower, were added. Everyone is just mesmerized when these lights are lit up at night. More than the uses of the Eiffel Tower, it has become a famous symbol of Paris. A visit to Paris is in fact incomplete without visiting this well-known building.
