Understanding how windmills work is not that difficult. The traditional windmills are still available and are the objects that remain popular in people’s minds. But modern ones are now replacing them.

How do Traditional Windmills Function?

These rely on blades that collect the wind which goes over them. The blades look a lot like aircraft wings. The blades’ shape generates a pressure difference on the opposing surfaces. This turns the machine into a central drive shaft.

In traditional models, the shaft is linked to a grinder or stone. The link is made possible by several gears. Other models have power saws. To generate electricity, a generator is linked to a drive shaft. As the blades move, electricity is produced.

There are basically two kinds of windmills; the vertical axis and horizontal axis turbines. The former is more common. The vertical axis types have blades resembling an egg beater. The horizontal axis have blades shaped like those on airplanes.

When studying how windmills work, keep in mind that electricity is created within. Even though there are variants, they are linked to the blades. As long as a breeze is present, electricity will be generated. In essence, that is how all these turbines function.
