The origins of hockey remain debatable to date and there is no tangible evidence of the inventor of the game. However, it is said to have emerged around 1850 through British soldiers who were stationed in Nova Scotia in Canada. It was taken up by students at McGill University in Canada’s Montreal region who in 1872 developed rules for the game. The first players used a rubber ball in contrast to the puck that is used today. By the end of the 18th century, the games rules which were by then known as the ‘McGill rules’ replaced the ball with a puck.
Ice Hockey has a great similarity to a winter sport played in the Scottish highlands for a long time known as Shinty. Another theory holds that Scottish immigrants to Canada may have imported the game and made some variations to create Ice Hockey. Puck
is a word that is derived from Scottish Gaelic language and it means to hit. The game was first played in the States in the 1890’s between Yale University and Johns Hopkins. Over the years, the game became almost more popular in the United States than in Canada where it originated from. Americas National Hockey League in America is currently the largest Ice Hockey league in the world.
