Popcorn is a type of corn that is able to explode or ‘pop’ whenever it is heated. Only a few corn types are able to pop and not all types of corn. The strain that is commonly used in popcorn production is the Zae Mays Averta. This type of corn that is cooked was initially discovered, for cooking, by the Native Americans but they are originally grown in Mexico quite early before the country was invaded by the Europeans who arrived from the North American shores. The origins of the corn can be dated as early back as 5,600 years ago when popcorn ears were located in a Bat Cave in New Mexico in the year 1948 and 1950.
The Native Americans were the first people to discover the cooking process of the popcorn and they attribute that the popcorn as a myth stating that an angry god had escaped from the corn kernel whenever it is popped. The myth described the noise people hear whenever the popcorn pops. Some other areas where the corn was found include on the east coast of Peru where grains over a 1000 years were discovered. The Indians of the South and North America also popped corn over 2000 years ago. Aztecs are another tribe that also discovered popcorn and decorated their garb with the corn that popped.
