Not because you’re being told to surrender your car to your local car shop doesn’t mean you can’t go online and search a couple of things first. Before you bring your car in a shop, it’s important that you gain as much free additional information as possible. The more you know about your car, the better for you because you’ll never know when perhaps you really didn’t have to bring it in the first place. Or, maybe there’s only one problem about your car but the car shop might rip you off by telling you other things that you need to replace even if it’s not necessary. Some car shops or auto mechanics might take advantage of you knowing that you don’t know much about your car. So what you need to know when you bring in your car in for a repair?

  1. The repair shop should inspect your car first before doing any work.
  2. After inspecting, it should be able to give you an estimate of the repairs needed before starting the job. This is to let you know how much it would cost for the repair. This estimate should be a written or verbal estimate and that the final bill cannot be more than 10% higher than their original estimate.
  3. When they inspect your car and tell you there’s a damaged or worn out part, always ask them to show you those parts because if you didn’t how can you tell that they’ve replaced that part if in the first place you didn’t see it? It’s also best to ask your technician to show you the specific damage and why it has failed. Was has caused it to get broken? Is it the way you clean your car, you drive your car, what oil you’re using, or where you park your car? Just let them know that you want to know so you can avoid it. Of course, a lot of parts simply wear out over time. At the same time, ask them to give you the worn-out or damaged parts in the box of your new replacement parts.
  4. When having parts replaced, always ask for the OEM parts, meaning original equipment manufacturer. There are other car part manufacturers that produce sub-standard replacement parts. So it’s best to stick to your car manufacturer’s original parts.
  5. Another thing to ask is how long the repair shop will warranty their repair. At the same time, ask if the labor cost is covered by the warranty. Of course, if you think you are being ripped off after hearing the price, it wouldn’t hurt to tell them you’ll get back to them and check on other auto shops first to get the best deal.
