A dynamic DNS is a protocol, network service or method, which provides networked devices the necessary capabilities to use a computer system or IP router and other internet protocol suites. This technology allows the user to carry out IP address updates on domains in good time. Dynamic DNS works in a manner that is similar to the names servers only that dynamic DNS has features that allow more flexibility. Dynamic DNS is associated with very dynamic systems and the domain name system permits access of domain names from servers with varying or dynamic IP addresses. When IP these dynamic addresses are allowed to host these domain names various websites and people are able to connect to particular servers without tracking the IP addresses for that server due to dynamic DNS. There are numerous providers on the internet commonly referred to as dynamic DNS service-providers that offer this technology and related services.

Internet growth has continued to be rapid, while workplace and home computers have continued to increase. This has led to the increased burden to IP address administrators while trying to keep track of the IP addresses that they have been assigned and managing address space they are responsible for. Available space has to be conserved and DNS servers have to be automatically current, a role fulfilled by dynamic DNS efficiently. Dynamic DNS can also be viewed as an addition to the DNS standard. It defines protocol used to dynamically update DNS servers with altered or new values. Originally, administrators manually configured records that DNS servers had stored. Dynamic DNS allows the process to happen on automatic basis for IP addresses that are changing continually without human intervention of any kind.

In simpler language, DNS allows FQDN (fully qualified domain name), which never changes to be connected or associated with an IP address that is dynamically assigned and can change often. DNS service is implemented on IU network and works for XP professional, Windows 2000, Windows 2000 and 2003 server versions. It does not work for XP home edition, NT 4.0, Me, Windows 95 and 98. It also does not work for operating systems that are not Windows such as Linux, BSD or Mac OS. Dynamic DNS service providers use special programs, which run on users’ computer contacting DNS service every time a change occurs in IP address that is provided by ISP. The dynamic method of assigning addresses conveniently extends usable pool of IP addresses that are available.
