Fatigue, in common understanding, is exhaustion, weariness, or tiredness due to exertion of effort. It varies in degrees, depending also on the person’s tolerance, personality, and mindset. Fatigue can happen physically or mentally. Symptoms of fatigue could be apathy and drowsiness. It is a normal reaction of the mind and body. It can happen because of just plain work-related stress, emotional stress, lack of sleep, and many others. But it can also be a symptom of a serious disease. If you have done everything to gain back your energy, such as balanced diet and complete rest, but you are still not relieved, it is always best to visit a doctor to diagnose you. To learn more about fatigue, read on some of its causes.

  1. Normally, fatigue can be felt when you have infections like flu. It can also happen that you still feel tired after a couple of weeks of having infection.

  2. Depending on the person, fatigue can be considered as one of the symptoms of diabetes. If you have been experiencing exhaustion for some time, it is always best to consult a physician to diagnose if you have diabetes. It is an illness that must be treated immediately before it gets worse.

  3. There is a condition known as chronic fatigue syndrome which causes tiredness without any reason. It is a sickness that can be hard to diagnosed, but doctors point this out as a problem if all other tests that can possibly cause fatigue fail. Chronic fatigue syndrome may not have direct cure but it can be handled well for the patient to slowly go back to his or her normal state.

  4. Cancer is one of the most severe diseases known. It can slowly bring down the energy of the patient. Fatigue or exhaustion in varying degrees can be one of its symptoms.

  5. Metabolism can also affect your productivity. Having slow metabolism means the food that you eat does not convert to useful energy right away. As a result, you feel exhausted. There are medications given by the doctors if you think you have low metabolism rate. On the other hand, having fast metabolism can also cause fatigue since high metabolism rate is related to having high pulse rate. This makes resting and sleeping difficult, which again causes fatigue.

  6. Getting into emotional stress can also lead to fatigue. Severe cases of depression would require help from a specialist.

  7. Lastly, one of the most common cases among women is anemia, which results to lack of oxygen in the body. Losing a lot of blood, probably due to surgery, cancer, heavy menstrual periods, trauma, or digestive or urinary tract bleeding, can lead to fatigue.
