Description
Simply defined, Chlamydia is an infection in some part of the body caused by bacteria. This bacterium is known as the Chlamydia Trachomatis. Chlamydia is considered as one of the most common sexually transmitted infections, infecting about 4 million women yearly. Some of the body parts commonly infected by Chlamydia are the urethra and penis in men; the cervix and vagina in women. However, other parts like the anus, throat and eyes are also affected in both sexes.
Consequences of Chlamydia
It is difficult to tell when one is infected with Chlamydia because the symptoms are often very mild in nature. Sometimes, the symptoms are totally non existent. Consequently, is it possible for one to be infected and not know it. However, Chlamydia is an infection that may result in serious complications. If one is infected and they do not get treatment, there is the possibility that the infection may progress. Infertility is often the end result of a Chlamydia infection. In women, the infection is likely to result in protracted health problems. For instance, what is referred to as PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease), which makes it hard and sometimes even impossible for women to conceive even after treatment?
Tracomatis Bacteria
Chlamydia is essentially caused by the Tracomatis Bacteria. This bacteria is commonly found in the urethra and the cervix. However, it may also be present in the rectum and throat of the infected. Chlamydia is said to be very similar to the sexually transmitted infection Gonorrhea, especially in as far as the mode of transmission and the symptoms. Chlamydia affects millions of people every year.
Transmission of Chlamydia
The Chlamydia causing bacteria is transmitted from person to person in two main ways. The most common way is through sexual intercourse with an infected person. When the bodily fluids mix, blood, semen and vaginal fluids, the bacteria is passed from one person and onto the other. Since the bacteria can also be found in the blood, it is possible for a person to get infected with Chlamydia just by coming into close contact with infected blood. Another way in which the bacteria causing Chlamydia may be transferred is during child birth. In this case, the infected mother passes it on to her child. During birth, if the bacterium penetrates into the new child’s eyes, it becomes very likely that the baby will end up blind. The Tracomatis Bacteria, which causes Chlamydia, may be treated with the help of antibiotics.
