Wedding Speech Preparations

You have written your wedding speech, you have practiced and visualized the delivery and now, you just have to perform. Unless you have a photographic memory, you will not be able to recite your speech word for word, without some form of prompt. I have seen some people using cue cards and some, with the entire speech typed, or written out on a sheet of paper to jog their memory during the speech.

Cue Cards (Prompt cards)

On small pieces of card, perhaps around postcard size, write down the key points of your speech.

It is best not to write your entire speech on the cards as this can:

  • stop you from engaging the audience while you are reading from the cards
  • make your speech sound robotic, lacking that all-important personal touch
  • cause you to become even more flustered if you lose trackwedding speech Wedding Speech Preparations

Some Useful Tips for Writing a Wedding Specch

A good wedding speech sounds like it comes from the heart and not from mere pieces of paper.

You cannot predict your audience’s reactions and if someone makes a comment, you may miss it entirely while reading from pages,. You will not be able to have a pertinent response and you might even react impulsively and say the wrong things that could infuriate your guests.

Ideally you want to glance at the card, take the prompt and deliver your next few lines.

Making eye contact is the key to a successful speech. Never lose your audience or allow their attention to meander. You can’t do this if you are reading your speech out loud from the cards.

Your prompt cards should only serve as a reminder and so, go through your speech several times and be absolutely sure and comfortable of what you are going to say.

Wish you good luck and here’s hoping you make some memorable wedding speeches that are special and unique.
