Turkmenistan is becoming a hot tourist spot nowadays. Through government efforts, developments in the country have been uncontrollable. Constructions of 4 star hotels, infrastructures, creation of different facilities are only some of the reasons why more and more tourists plan their travel to Turkmenistan. Currently, it has the most modern and largest airport in Central Asia. Just like other countries in Central Asia, Turkmenistan is also known to have a rich history and culture which interests a lot of travelers.

Flying to Turkmenistan

If you plan to travel to Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan Airlines and Lufthansa are only some of the airlines that fly to the country. The only airline that offers direct flights from Europe to Turkmenistan is Turkmenistan Airlines.

Some Cultural Facts

  • You can easily distinguish women who are married or unmarried through what they wear. Married women wear a large handkerchief and one braid. Unmarried women wear a small scarf and two braids.

  • Yurta, a traditional tent, is used as a house during summer and is set up in their yards.

  • A lot of marriages in the country are arranged. But through the modern culture, marriages out of love are becoming popular.

Sights and Attractions

  1. Ertogrulgazi Mosque- It was built in 1997 and it is considered the biggest mosque in the country.

  2. Carpet Museum- If you love carpets, you should not forget to visit this place. Antique carpets from the 17th century are displayed in this museum. Also, the two largest carpets made in the country can be found here.

  3. Talkuchka- For those who want to shop, this Sunday Bazaar is very famous in the city of Ashgabat. Prices are also low compared to the stores around Turkmenistan.

  4. National Museum of History and Ethnography- Turkmenistan is very rich in history. This museum has 9 halls and it is filled with different artifacts and collections that are considered important. One of these is the ivory collection discovered at Old Nissa during the Arshakid Dynasty.

  5. Yekedeshik Cave Town- It is an architectural reserve found in Tagta-Bazar. During spring, you can see the land filled with mushrooms and tulips.

  6. Serakhs- It is located between Nishapur and Merv on the Great Silk Road. This city is also a historical place in the country.

  7. Repetek Biosphere Reserve- It is situated in eastern Karakum with an area of 34,600 hectares. This can be considered as a haven for nature lovers. Various species of flora and fauna can be seen in this reserve.

  8. Kugitang Natural Reserve- Another place to visit by tourists who love sceneries is the Kugitang Natural Reserve. It occupies an area of 27,139 hectares. Unique species of both flora and fauna will definitely interest you.
