Every year, more and more tourists flock to Syria. It can be considered a modern country, but at the same time, keeping its ancient heritage. Popular cities of the country are known to be early inhabited settlements, which is why tourists could expect Syria to have rich history and culture. Frequent travelers continue to discover the astonishing natural sceneries and architectures of Syria.

Climate

Autumn and spring are the best time to travel to Syria. Summer can be too hot and dry, while winter can be too cold and rainy.

Language

Arabic is the official language of Syria. Other languages that are widely spoken and understood by the locals are Kurdish, Aramaic, Armenian, French, Circassian, and English.

Transportation

There are several ways to travel around Syria. Public transportations, such as trains, buses and taxis, are inexpensive ways to go around the country. Other options are car rentals and airplane through Syrian Air, their national airline.

Currency

Syrian Pound or Lira is the currency used in the country. Lira is available in both bank notes and coins. Exchanging foreign currency to Lira can be difficult in Syria, but you can obtain Syrian Pound by advising major travelling agencies beforehand. Syrian Bank can also sell Lira in exchange of other foreign currencies. But if you have U.S. dollars and major European currencies, other banks in Syria can accommodate you.

Places to Visit

  1. Damascus- It is the capital of Syria and it is the oldest populated city in the whole world. The Ebla tablets prove the existence of the city since 3rd millennium BC. Numerous architectures, such as the Umayyad Mosque, Tomb of Saladin and Azem Palace, can be visited in this ancient city. Markets in Damascus are also popular. You can try visiting Souk al-Hamaidiye, Souk al-Harir Souk al-Bzourieh, and Souk Madhat Pasha.

  2. Allepo – It is also known as Halab and it is the second largest city in the country. This city claims to be the oldest settlement. The stone tablets from 2000 BC are one of the earliest references about the city. The attractions of Allepo include the National Museum, Museum of Popular Tradition, and The Great Mosque which is one the largest in the world.

  3. Homs – It is the third largest city in the country and it is located north of Damascus. The major attraction of Homs is the Khalid Ibn Al-Walid Great Mosque and the Syrian Amarain Church. Other tourist spots also include Kaneesat Um Zummar, Kaneesat Mar Elian, the Citadel, Al Nouri Mosque, and Krak Des Chevaliers.
