When we hear the place Maldives, we usually think of the beach, the Robinson Crusoe islands, the breath-taking underwater world, the lagoons and all the other wonders of nature we can think of. Maldives is known to be a perfect holiday destination to relax and forget about the stressful city life. Geography
The area of Maldives extends 120 kilometers from east to west and 820 kilometers from north to south. It consists of 26 atolls with 1,192 islets. 202 of these are inhabited and 87 are exclusive resorts. Maldives is located in the southwest of Sri Lanka.
What to Wear
The climate is usually warm and humid. The temperature in the country averages from 29 to 39 degrees Celsius. The sun is up through out the year. Considering the climate in Maldives, people dress casually. T-shirt or any cotton clothing is the most appropriate. Women are advised to wear modest apparel when strolling around the capital island, Male’, and when in inhabited islands.
Language
Most locals speak Dhivehi. But tourists can easily communicate to them through English since it is a widely spoken language in the island. Also, some staffs of resorts can also speak a variety of languages like English, French, German, Japanese and Italian.
Currency
The currency in Maldives is Rufiyaa and Laaree. The most usual foreign currency used is the U.S. Dollar. Resorts and hotels also accept other forms of payment aside from cash like travelers’ cheques and credit cards. The usual accepted credit cards are Visa, American Express, Master Card, Euro Card, Diners Club and JCB.
Sights to See
- Islamic Centre – It is the most stunning architecture of Male’. There you will see the astonishing golden dome. The structure was completed in 1984 and it symbolizes the religion of Islam. Part of the Centre is a mosque that could fit 5,000 people. There is also a conference hall, library, offices and classrooms.
- National Museum – The National Museum is located in the Sultan’s Park, formerly the Sultan’s Palace. You will see several historical articles inside such as the palanquins and thrones from previous sultans, the rifle of Mohamed Thakurufaanu, the very first printing press of Maldives, the robes used in ceremonies, the umbrellas for Sultans, various figures and statues from the 11th century, and many more. The museum proves that the country has rich and unique culture. Only a small admission fee is charged for the entrance in the building.
- Male’ Fish Market – This is where various local products are sold. During the afternoon, more and more people start to go to the market since fishermen return with their catch during that time.
- Mulee-aage – It is a place completed in 1906 to replace the house built in the mid 17th century. When the country became a republic in 1953, Mulee-aage became the official residence of the President until 1994. Currently, it is the President’s Office.
- Huskuru Miskiiy – The structure was built in 17th century. Huskuru Miskiiy, also known as Friday Mosque, is the main mosque of Male’ for about 4 centuries. It was built by Sultan Ibrahim Iskandhar in 1656. The building is made up of coral curving, which can be considered the best all over the world.
