The thing is, you will only know if it’s time to replace that fuel filter when you remove it and try to blow through it. If there is some resistance, then the filter is still working just as good. However, if there’s none or very little, then it means it’s already dirty and needs replacement. Just make sure that when you blow through the filter, don’t put your mouth too close to the filter. - Plugged fuel filter – If you have a plugged fuel filter, your engine will be stopped because of the choking effect. Your fuel is choked to the carburetor or injectors. What will happen is that your engine won’t start. However, even if it starts, it will just stall later on and then your engine dies. Some engines may have a spring-loaded bypass. This way, even if your filter gets clogged, the fuel can still flow. However, the bad thing about that is the fuel that passes gets dirt to your injectors or carburetor. When that happens, other problems may happen. In short, it’s still best to make sure you’re always running on clean and clear filter.
- Partially restricted fuel filter – On the other hand, if your fuel filter is only partially restricted, it will still allow fuel to pass. It can pass enough fuel while your engine is at idle or running on low speed. However, if you push towards higher speeds or if you have a higher load, then your engine won’t receive enough fuel to let it run at high speed. A partially restricted filter will only starve your engine and it will feel like its losing power. You can run the car around the village but if you go into freeways or highways, you will surely not get the minimum speed allowed on those roads. You won’t be able to pass on cars and you’ll just be honked at because you’re too slow. Just make sure to check your fuel filter on a regular basis.
