I almost decided not to write this article as I thought that nobody would entertain the idea of donning scuba diving equipment that included a spear gun! However, not everybody is trained by responsible diving agencies such as the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) or the British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC) and there are some that would see that scuba gear would enable them to pursue the hunt for fish a little easier than by using a snorkel and being restricted to breathing from the surface.

Indeed we see James Bond in the film Thunderball pitted against underwater foes in a spear gun battle! Very exciting stuff but obviously very dangerous. At least they were trying to kill each other. Films and books sometimes do glamorise the use of s spear gun and therefore it does no harm to air some of the reasons why spear fishing should be restricted to surface breathing hunters.

Spear fishing is a skillfull sport when using a snorkel. The swimmer must be very fit and the outcome of the hunt is by no means certain. It is quite hard to get close to a fish worthy of capture when your air supply is restricted. Conversely, a scuba diver who does not have to surface but who can lurk in wait for the unsuspecting quarry is not fairly matched with his quarry. The fish has little chance.

So spear fishing with scuba diving gear is unsporting. It is also dangerous as scuba diving requires that divers are in buddy pairs and that the dive must be undertaken in close proximity of your buddy in case of emergencies. Waving deadly spear guns around as a buddy pair within such an awkward environment is not to be advised. It is an invitation for an accident to happen and one party to be harpooned.

Spear fishing is not generally a popular sport these days. It is often frowned upon in the UK and USA. However, when undertaken safely using a snorkel it can be a respectable hobby, that allows a hunter to catch fish that they will subsequently consume.
