Are you constantly annoyed at that ABS light on your dash board? Sometimes, when you get that ABS light prompt in your dash, it could be possible that your ABS relay or controller is at fault. If you have already checked everything and you’ve narrowed down the problem to the controller itself, then perhaps your ABS relay or ABS controller needs to be replaced. If you have already checked your fuse and everything else yet that ABS prompt continues to light up, it’s time for replacement. Auto shops could charge you serious money, so if you have the patience to do this on your own, here is a guide to help you to replace your car ABS relay or controller. All you need to spend on is a new ABS control unit. Also, prepare your screwdrivers for this DIY project.

Just before you begin this project, make sure that you’ve disconnected the negative battery terminal. This is just for safety purposes since we will be working with your car’s electrical system such as this electronic component called the ABS control unit.

Locate your ABS control unit. It is protected by a plastic shield to protect it from moisture and other contaminants. It should either be in the passenger compartment or under your car’s hood. It can even be exposed but conveniently located behind an access panel under your dashboard.

To expose the ABS relay or control unit, simply unscrew or unclip the cover that hides it. Make sure to do this carefully so as to not damage any part or component or even crack the cover.

Now, it’s time to disconnect the ABS Relay wiring harness. Locate the ABS block that you need to remove. It can be grouped with other electrical components or is simply by itself. Compare at the new part you bought to make sure you are looking the right ABS block.

Before you remove the wires, it would be best to look at the way it is set up. You can take digital photos or notes for reference later on.

Now, start removing the wiring from the ABS unit. You’ll need the help of your screwdrivers to do this.

Once the wires are out, it’s time to take out that old faulty ABS control unit or relay. It can be secured by either a slide-in type of holder or screws so simply remove screws or slide it up and out.

Now that the old ABS relay is out, it’s time to place your new ABS relay or controller just like how the old one was installed. Put back the wires and the covers. Reconnect your battery and try it out!
