A civil lawyer deals with disputes arising between individuals and between individuals and organizations. In such disputes, individuals or organizations that are proved by courts to have been aggrieved can be compensated. For instance, if a public car crashes and a victim of the accident files claims against the car’s driver for the injuries or losses suffered, the suit will be treated as a civil law case. The civil lawyer must therefore have appropriate qualifications including a degree in law with a bias towards civil law. In addition, the lawyer needs to be registered as practicing civil lawyer in order to carry on with the profession. A civil lawyer must be well versed with civil law.

A civil lawyer represents clients in courts and argues in their support. The preliminary role of the lawyer is to advise or counsel his or her clients on issues that relate to the clients’ legal rights and obligations. The lawyer also offers suggestions to clients on what course of action can be taken to handle particular legal issues. This particularly arises after the lawyer has investigated the prevailing circumstances, such as a case of an individual injured in a car accident and the events that led to the accident. In such a case, the civil lawyer will investigate how the accident occurred, especially if there is an indication that the accident occurred as a result negligence by the driver. A civil lawyer will chart a path that protects the victim and ensure that the victim is compensated for the injuries suffered of losses incurred.

A civil lawyer usually has a variety of clients including individuals, aid societies, non-profit organizations, and disadvantaged people in the society. One can choose to specialize in dealing with particular individuals or groups or operate across the board. In all cases the civil lawyer operates by meeting clients at their place or his or her own office as well as in courts.
