About seventy five percent of women experience hot flashes for longer than one year. About half of the women in the world experience hot flashes for up to five years. There is no known cause why hot flashes occur, but medical experts suspect that hormone level fluctuation may be linked to the cause. Hot flashes cause the dilation near the skin’s surface, which causes the blood flow to increase. The blood increase causes the skin around the head and neck to become flushed. Women may sweat profusely during this change. Hot flashes may last 30 seconds to five minutes, which causes the body to feel extremely warm inside and chills sometimes follow it.
