Patio Furniture Cushions : Ready-made or Make Your Own?

You can pay a lot of money for ready made patio furniture cushions so you may be tempted to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages of making them yourself over buying. As usual, as with a lot of these questions, the answer depends on a number of factors:-

1. Whether your Patio Furniture is a Standard Size

If your garden furniture is pretty standard in dimensions you may be able to get outdoor patio cushions from a discount store where you will get a decent set of cushions for a good price. If you have to go the custom route however things can get a bit more expensive and it becomes more cost effective to make your own.

2. Whether You Have the Skills

Patio cushions are not easy to make. That is because you cannot use regular fabric. You need special treated fabric which is resistant to fading and has waterproof properties. This makes the fabric more substantial than regular fabric and difficult to get the needle through. Couple that with the need for cushions to be exceptionally robust to deal with the rigors of life on your garden chair, and you will know that you have to have good sewing skills to get acceptable results.

3. Whether You Have New Ideas you want to Implement

Perhaps you are unhappy with the range of patio cushions on offer and want to try something new. Unfortunately you will probably find that you are still restricted by the availability of fabrics which are meant for outdoor use. Nevertheless you will still probably have more options than if you stick to ready made cushions, especially if you have non-standard furniture. One idea might be to use plain ready made cushions and then to decorate these with interesting scatter cushions which you take indoors when not in use. This might allow you more creativity without compromising on the practical aspects of the main cushions.
