Bootcamp is a tool that is used by the Mac operating system to allow
computers to operate using two different operating systems at the same time. Bootcamp enables computer users to use their current operating system whether it is Leopard or Windows without switching computers.
What Bootcamp does is to create two hard drive partitions from the Mac partition. The partition for Mac is compressed to create space for the Window OS. However, the data that was contained in the Mac’s hard drive is preserved. Those who want to use Bootcamp should follow the following procedures.
-
Make sure to back up data when using the software to form partitions. Backing up data will prevent data loss in the event the process goes wrong. Though such problems are rare, to be on the safe side it is wise to back up all data.
-
Check to see if the Mac being used is based on Intel. This is because the Bootcamp software can only be used on Intel Based Mac.
-
Ensure the computer is connected to the internet, then log in to Apple’s official website. From the website download and save the file on the desktop. The file extension of the program will appear as .dmg.
-
Click to open the file with the extension .dmg. Make sure to read and understand the file “Read Before You Install”. Also, read the installation and setup guide, before proceeding to install.
-
Open the icon” Bootcamp Assistant”. When prompted for the installation destination, choose “Macintosh HD” and then click “Continue”. Make sure to type the user’s name and the password for authentication purposes. The installation process may take a while, so be patient.
-
Once Bootcamp has been installed, close the install dialog box.
-
Use Spotlight to automatically locate the updated Bootcamp assistant. Alternatively, check under Applications and Utilities, to search for it manually and then open the Bootcamp assistant.
-
Make sure the computer’s firmware is updated. To do this visit the Apple’s support and Downloads site, then download the necessary files. Install the files then reboot the computer system.
-
Insert a CD or DVD with the Leopard operating system to make sure the drivers are up to date and then install the drivers.
-
Install the appropriate version of Windows operating system (either Vista or XP) to the Mac’s hard drive.
After the installation is complete reboot the system to ensure that the application or program is incorporated and running. Press the option key to choose the operating system desired.
