Backtrack is basically a live bootable CD with myriads of TCP/IP and wireless networking tools. It is a distribution of Linux after the Collection of Auditor Security and Whax merged and is used for the purposes of Penetration testing. It permits the inclusion of additional tools, configurable kernels and customizable scripts in modified distributions by the users.
Writing Files and Storage
Due to its nature as a live CD that runs from the CDROM, files have nowhere to be written to unless a Linux partition exists on a storage device such as a USB or hard drive. Since Backtrack comprises of NTFS support, this enhances the ability to browse to a hard drive that is Windows based if it is available, although the partition is mounted as “read-only”.
Hard Disk and Partitions
By dual booting Ubuntu and Windows on the system, this ensures that Linux swap and reiserfs partitions are available and Backtrack easily detects and mounts them. To find the USB or hard drive storage device, the user is required to browse to the File Manager’s /mnt folder. If the hard drive has an excess of one partition it will typically appear with a name such as hd2 or hd1. Hdb1 could alternatively be used to indicate the presence of more than a single hard disk.
