It is possible to start a trucking business and once initiated, it is both extremely hard to maintain as well as very beneficial. As is the case of owning any other business, there are benefits as well as a large potential for expansion and income. The major huddle in starting a business is making it succeed past the first two years, which is very a hard task. There are many different types of trucking companies that are independent. The following is a process of starting and managing a trucking business.

Starting the business

  • Write a business plan that is complete with the inclusion of the kind of trucking company that you want to start. The common of these types of companies is one that offers moving or hauling items on behalf of other companies.
  • Establish where the money for the starting capital will come from. If there is a need for a loan or a savings account maybe, this is the most vital part in starting a new venture. Operating expenses need to be calculated at least for the first three months.
  • Pursue all the documents that are needed, which include permits and business licenses. They also include USDOT numbers, IRP tags, IFTA decals, Fuel Tax Reporting, 2290’s, and MC numbers. The needed insurance for specific type of business should also be sort after to avoid any problems when running the business.
  • Build relations and begin networking to find clients. This includes cold calling, creation of a great market plan and attendance to conferences.
  • Hire truck drivers that are extremely qualified. This though should be done according to the resources that one has. If the finances allow for it, get the best there is. Hiring owner-operators is also advisable because this will help cut down the costs by preventing the purchase of a fleet. Extensive background search should be conducted on the drivers before they are hired. Nothing can be more detrimental to a business kicking off than having an accident or any type of incident early on due to an unprofessional driver.

  • The final step in starting a trucking company is to follow the basic and simple requirements, which when overlooked could be very detrimental to the business. The licensing procedures should also be focused on. Having different strategies for landing contracts is also a crucial point in starting this sort of business because the contracts are what keep the company afloat. The road to starting and maintaining may be bumpy but the rewards are worth it.

I would like to add a suggestion to your list and comment on your third bullet point. If you’re starting a trucking business that has more than 1 truck, I believe that its a good idea to have fleet management software to help keep track of the maintainence.

But in regards to your third bullet point, I want to add on that getting all of those certifications can be a huge pain in the butt. I suggest finding a place to get them all in once fell swoop. I hope this helps! Good luck!
