Fuel is necessary to keep an engine running. And a fuel pump is used to feed the fuel to the engine. If your fuel pump is not strong enough you cannot extract the optimal power from your engine. And of course if your fuel pump goes bad your engine will lose power and worse, your engine might blow up because of running too lean. Thus, here is a guide to help you to replace fuel pump.
The things you need to replace your fuel pump would be the following: of course a new replacement fuel pump, new fuel line, open end wrench set, socket set, flat head and Phillips head screwdriver and a container to catch spilling fuel. It may be wise to have a fire extinguisher handy since you will be working with a flammable substance.
First off, make sure you work in a well ventilated area. Disconnect the battery so that you are sure that there is no power and to avoid sparks which may cause the fuel to ignite. Relieve the fuel pressure by removing the fuel fill cover.
The two types of electric fuel pumps are the in-line and the in-tank.
-
The in-tank would mean that your fuel pump is inside the fuel tank. To get to it you would usually have to remove your back seat. You would need to remove the access panel covering the fuel pump usually being held by a few screws.
-
The in-line would be outside the fuel tank along your fuel line to the engine. This is typically located just in-front of the fuel tank under your car. To get to it you would probably need to jack-up your car and slide under it.
Once you can see your fuel pump you would need to disconnect the power line and the fuel line. There are two fuel lines, one going out and the other going in. These lines usually have quick-disconnects for easy removal while some uses hose clamps to hold the fuel line in-place. After this you would have to remove the bolts/screws that are holding the fuel pump. Then slowly remove the fuel pump. Make sure you have the container beside you to catch the fuel that is still in the pump.
Now that you have removed the old fuel pump get your replacement fuel pump and put it in by reversing the removal process. Make sure you keep the fuel lines clean and free from debris as these may cause clog in your fuel line.
