Car rusts can definitely depreciate the value of your car. But for some places, car rust is inevitable because there are some areas that are more prone to rust compared to others. Usually, these are the locations that experience winter. It is during this time when road salts are scattered around for the safety of the drivers. For those who are not aware, salt is the number one reason why rusts develop. This is why it is important to wash your car regularly to take off the salt and dirt that can initiate corrosion. It is also advisable to have your car protected from rust which is offered by car dealers or automobile shops. Take note that once your car starts to have rust, it spreads fast like cancer. Therefore, you need to repair it as soon as you discover one, no matter how small it is; or else it can be uncontrollable. To make things easier for you, below are the quick fix steps to repair rust spots on your car.
- Check the body of your car thoroughly. Locate the spots where rust appears. Again, it is better to repair small spots right away than letting the rusts grow bigger, which will certainly cost you in the long run.
- After you have located all the spots that need to be repaired, take off the rust using 150 grit sandpaper. When sanding, be gentle and apply even pressure all the time. You would not want your car to have bumpy areas. That’s why you should never do this process hurriedly.
- For rusts that are too deep, you should not sand down the whole area up to that level. Put on body filler for deep spots or holes to make the surface still even and to keep the rust from coming back.
- You can then use a thick paper and tape it surrounding the area to be painted. This is to avoid spills or splattered sprays on the other parts of your car.
- Spray the primer thinly. Let one coat dry first before applying another. Do not spray near the surface because this can cause drips or bubbles. Such imperfections happen and if it does, just sand that particular area and apply primer again.
- Then, spray on the paint thinly. Try to exactly match it with the color of your car. Before applying another coat of paint, always check if it already blends well with the entire body because you might end up having a dark area on your car if you just keep on spraying.
- When the paint dries up, take off the tape. You might be noticing edges because of the tape. Use rubbing compound to remove it. But if it does not work, a very fine sandpaper could remove the edges. Then, lightly spray the paint on it.
- Lastly, apply on clear coat to closely match the color of the repaired area to the rest of the body.
