Mower decks are garden devices that facilitate the cleaning or cutting of grass in a uniform way. The mower decks are repaired by following several steps that include:
- Streaking to remove dust particles and uncut grass that remains in the mower. Operational mistakes that aggravate the problem are blades not being sharp enough or well pointed. Old blades need to be replaced and mowing should be done at maximum speed even if the speed of the mower is slow.
- Leveling the deck in the proper way is important as uneven cutting can result from sharp edges found in the lawn surface. Tires should be installed correctly and checked regularly. Twisted or loose spindle as well as damaged deck shells should be replaced with new ones.
- Maladjustments arising from muted edges of blades need to be repaired by reinstalling the mower blades to avoid the wavy effect.
- Scalping is a problem that causes the mower deck to cut too loosely to the grass. It can be caused by a very fast motor speed, an uneven surface, jagged or bouncy lawn etc. The lawn needs leveling before mowing. The reduced height in the cutting needs to be raised if the height of the mower deck is low. Tires need to be checked or inflated to make them even.
- Stingers are pieces of uncut grass that are left behind in the mower deck when the blades are not well maintained. Blades need to be filed and mower deck kept clean from soiling and uncut grass. An engine slow in momentum can be accelerated by mowing at full speed.
To remove the mower deck for thorough repairs both the grass catcher and a plastic tunnel that guides the grass catcher need to be removed first. The plastic piece is fastened by just two pins. The lower deck is then lowered slowly to the ground. The height adjustment arm and the lock holding the deck in place are easily removed by pulling as no weight is on them while the deck rests on the floor. To improve the efficiency of the mower deck requires that:
- The cutting rows are overlapped for efficient cutting.
- More overlapping compensates turning the mower deck, an act that reduces the cutting width.
- Mower blade damage causes stepped cutting where sharp ridges are left in the lawn surface. To correct the anomaly damaged blades are replaced, while damaged deck and mower spindle can be repaired or replaced as well.
