If you see that the noise is coming from a dangling car exhaust, you will need to repair it. If you don’t have that much money to spare for a repair, then perhaps you can do it on your own to save a couple of bucks. Here is a guide that will help you learn how to repair a dangling car exhaust. Don’t worry because it is an easy task that you can do all on your own.
Hearing that extra clunk underneath your car or seeing sparks beneath your car while driving at night can be annoying and might lead to bigger problems if you let that dangling car exhaust unrepaired for a long time. Exhaust hangers or muffler straps as most people call them, are simply thick rubber loops that hold your muffler to your car. Like any rubber material, it will eventually give up and wear out. That’s when you start hearing your muffler skidding through the roads as you drive. But of course, to make sure that it is really the clunking sound of metal in your car, first take a peek under your car. Follow your exhaust pipe to the muffler or the other way around, whichever is easier for you to locate. There should be at the least one black rubber you’ll see that serves as an exhaust hanger. You will notice right away if there’s any broken so it won’t be hard to find. At the same time, check the other exhaust hangers to make sure they are still in good condition. Now that you’ve found the worn out exhaust hanger, here’s how to fix the problem.
-
Remove the old exhaust hanger. You will see a top mount where the other exhaust hangers or the old exhaust hangers were attached to. Remove the old exhaust hanger from the top mount as well as the muffler. In some cars, there could be two pieces. SO make sure that you remove all of the old exhaust hangers from there.
-
Hang the new exhaust hanger. Grab your new exhaust hanger and start hanging it on the top exhaust mount which is the mount attached to your car. Let it dangle as you go to the next step.
-
Get a crescent wrench to hold it and hang the muffler. It’s best to have someone help you to hold the muffler in place while you attach it to the new exhaust hanger. If not, just hold up the muffler while you slip the muffler mount to your new exhaust hanger. With the use of a crescent wrench with a hole in the handle, slide the handle end through your exhaust hanger. Now, put the hole in the handle on the mount of your exhaust. Simply use your Crescent wrench to slide the exhaust hanger over the mount. Now you’re done!
