Sometimes the carpet may be worn out, frayed or torn in some places more than others. In other instances, the carpet may be having cigarette burns or may be in need of patching. Rather than replace the carpet, it is more cost effective to repair. It is possible to repair your own carpet as opposed to seeking professional services which are quite expensive. In order to repair or patch a carpet, one requires the use of such tools as:
- Carpet cutter,
- Nails/tucks
- Double sided tape
- A carpet patch tool.
- Pliers
- Upholstery needle
The following steps should be care fully followed.
1.The very first thing one needs to do is cover the area that needs repair with a piece of scrap carpet that has appropriately been trimmed.
2.The existing carpet then needs to be temporarily tucked round the edge of the patching piece.
3.Using the patch as a guide, the damaged part of the carpet is then cut out.
4.After removing that section of the carpet that was damaged, one may then either install on the sub floor the double faced tape or pad all round the hole.
5.Next, the patch is securely positioned on the patch and firmly pressed onto the tape.
6.Once the process is complete, all the temporary tucks have to be removed so as to release the tension.
In the case of repairing a torn carpet or one that has a burst seam, one may also use the same tools as above. However, the following steps are to be followed.
1.First, both sides of the carpet that are torn need to be pulled close together such that they meet.
2.Temporary tucks may be used to hold the carpet in place on both sides of the tear.
3.One may then use a curved upholstery needle and a monofilament thread for purposes of sewing the carpet.
4.The pliers come in handy at this point as they are necessary for pulling the needle through the backing of the carpet.
5.Finally, after the tear has been effectively sewn, final stitching on the seam will help to secure it.
It is also possible to repair a carpet tear by using a carpet adhesive. The biggest advantage of using a carpet adhesive, lies in the fact that the adhesive container comes with the ‘how to’ directions, which makes it that more convenient to use.
