Benefits of exercise in relation to stress

If exercise were considered a drug, then it would have been the most influential medication on earth. Research shows that physical exercise is a perfect tension and stress reliever. When carried out properly, exercise is a great stress remedy giving the body an opportunity to perform at optimum performance. Mentally, exercise normally offers an outlet for negative emotions sipping away irritability, anger and frustration and instead promoting a positive outlook and mood. Exercise improves one’s mood by the production of a positive biochemical change in the brain and body. Regular exercise will reduce the adrenal hormone amounts the body releases when one is stressed. Exercise generally enables the body to function well and keeps one feeling refreshed, relaxed and at the same time promotes restful and deep sleep. However, this is dependent on the person performing the exercise the right way.

Simple stress relieving exercises

Exercise used in relieving stress can be in the mental, spiritual, or physical form or an integration of the three like when practicing Yoga. There are numerous simple exercise plans that can be used in relieving stress. Start by locating a comfortable place where one can sit down and relax. It may be the office seat or a perfect spot at home. If wearing tight fitting clothes or a necktie, untie them to leave room for easy movement. Warm up then make circular motions using legs, wrists, arms, neck and head. After completing this, take some deep breaths for a couple of minutes. The exercise may look simple but as small and as simple as they may be, it is capable of relieving stress and preventing major health problems.

Breathing for relaxation

Breathing exercises come in handy when relieving stress. Deep sighs where one breathes air in using the nose and out via the mouth followed by breathing in through the nose and out via the nose are very important. Master the method of filling the chest cavity and abdomen and holding breath for some minutes before breathing out as this promotes healthy living. In most cases when stressed, people tend to hold in their breath. Since stress is normally held in the back, shoulders and neck, particular exercises are necessary to relieve stress. They include modified sun saluting, neck stretches, shoulder stretches, boxing, performing mixed martial arts, playing racket sports, dancing and even performing yoga.
