How to Install a Carpet

 

A well installed carpet makes the difference between a presentable room and one that is not. Once a carpet is worn out it requires replacement which means that a new carpet has to be installed. Carpet installation is a task that not every one wants to partake in. Nonetheless, by following some steps, one may easily install a carpet in their homes.

Installing the carpet requires the use of certain tools. These are:

  1. The very first thing that one has to do before they install any new carpet is make sure they remove the old carpet. However, even before you remove that old carpet it is advisable that you first vacuum it. This is important because it will probably be dirty and most likely very dusty. During the removal of the old carpet, you may inhale the dust. However, vacuuming serves to get rid of most of it. The very first tool to make use of is the utility knife. It helps to cut the old carpet into strips.
  2. You may then pull off the carpet from the tackless strips starting off at one end and finishing off at the other. Removing the underlay is important because then you will be able to carefully inspect the sub floor fastening any floor boards to ensure no squeals after the installation of the new carpet.
  3. After the removal of the old carpet, it is time to install the new one. The very first step is the installation of tackless strips all around the room. However, there is no need for strips on door ways. Half an inch of space is often left between the wall and the strips. It is imperative that all tacks and pins used face the wall.
  4. The next step involves the laying of the underlay followed by the carpet itself. The steaming iron is used for purposes of activating the joining adhesive while all seams may be sealed using the carpet roller. Using the carpet stretcher one is able to attach the carpet over the tackless strips. At this point one may carefully tack the carpet into gaps between the wall and in the tackless strips. Also, the carpet should be trimmed at door ways so that the edge is at the centre of the closed door, and a door edge strip put in place.
  5. Finally the mouldings are installed on the base boards and vent opening cut.
