Chestnuts fall off the trees just like apples and almonds though they are not as common as the named fruits. They are starchy like bread. To cut them, you will need a sharp knife and a cutting board. They can either be boiled, roasted or baked. Even though chestnuts may look very similar to the average nuts they are actually very low in fat so are very good and nutritious, chest nuts also have high water content. They contain a lot of protein, zinc, potassium calcium and are high in fibre. It is also quite difficult to make them into something eatable so one needs to be quite thorough when cooking them. In order to peel chestnuts one can either boil them till the skin begins to loosen or they can be put in a pan and put in the oven for about thirty minutes.
Baking Instructions
1.Gather some chestnuts and a board
2.Slit all the chestnuts with the sharp knife. This ensures that they do not explode in the oven and it makes it easy to peel them later on. If they happen to be bigger, it is advisable to put extra slits.
3.Cover them in a plate and put them in the oven. It cooks them faster and the preparations are minimal. Pre-heat the oven to 200 degrees. Time set should be 10-15 minutes and keep turning them after every five minutes to make sure that all sides are cooked.
4.The chestnuts are now ready if their shells have crushed and the inner flesh can be pierced with a sharp pointed knife. Remove them from the oven and leave them to cool for some minutes which could be longer since they normally get too hot.
5.By now they must have cooled down though abit warm. It is easy to peel them when they are still warm and so they should be covered using a tea towel to hold in the warmth. Peel them off by grabbing the chestnuts with the finger tips from the slits earlier made. Remove the brown skin in the inside also as it can be bitter. This should be easy.
6.The product is a plump hard yellow nut that is very delicious to taste. It is advisable to check out the nuts for some worms or even rotten sides that could be buried in there! Enjoy the meal.
