Cabinets are the spaces that are occupied by articles in the bathroom or kitchen. Back in the days, the cabinets were items that were easily built using wood workers because they were efficient in their work. There are people who may not be able to afford a professional carpenter and at the same time they may not be able to buy ready made cabinets. The best option should be to build cabinets and there are some things that need to be done.

  • The first option is to plan ahead before beginning the construction. With planning, it may be easy to decide what one needs, whether replacing or building the cabinet. There are several items that are needed and they are tools, joint fixings like glue or nails and lumber or plywood. Other types of material that may be needed is a saw, drill, knobs or handles, wood putty or sheets of woods.
  • The first step is to cut the sheets of wood according to the measurements that are desired for the desired cabinet. The points for the places where the shelves will be placed should be marked and holes drilled under the surface to a depth of 2mm.
  • After this step, the shelves should be inserted at the same time ensuring a 2mm gap from the front.
  • The shelves are then screwed to the holes that were pre-drilled and glue is used to keep them firm.
  • The kick board is the next item to be installed. This is done by placing the shelf top and making sure the 2mm gap is still adhered to from the back. 30mm screws are inserted in the pilot holes.
  • After this, place the base of the shelf and the above process is repeated attaching with glue and screws.
  • The kick board is then joined to the base by using 30mm nails and a gap between the edges and kickboard is left.
  • The back kickboard is fixed between the sides with the use of nails and leave a 10mm gap at the back.
  • The door and shelves are then fixed whereby a square back panel is cut and screwed onto the rear part of the cabinet.
  • Drill holes on the door pieces into the marks that have been placed for the shelves. The door panels are then nailed at the shelves front and for the final touches, the cabinet is placed down and the knobs are fixed as the centre of every outer panel.

Since most holes are left open and visible making the cabinet look untidy one can use wood putty to fill up any visible holes for the screws.
