The process of making a mouse trap car is an easy one. Gather the necessary materials such as a wooden mouse trap, rubber bands that stretch easily, plywood, screws of identical size, two steel rods of diameter 4mm and length of 6 cm, a string of about 18 inches and washes of 4 mm in diameter.

  • Using pliers, remove the bait holder and the wire catch that is used to hold the mouse trap open. Remove the staples that connect these pieces to the trap as well.

  • Push the end of the first eye hook gently to the far end of the trap, at least 5/16 inches from the frame of the wood. Ensure that the eye of the hook faces away from the trap.

  • At the remaining three corners of the edges of the mouse trap, place the eye hooks remaining.

  • Using a compass, draw on the plywood 4 circles each with a diameter of about 3 inches.

  • Using a drill, drill a hole in the center of each of the four circles drawn. Ensure that to insert the metal rod into the hole one will have to put some extra effort.

  • Using a coping saw or a jig saw, cut out the circles from the wood.

  • Use a flat file to smoothen the edges of the wheels cut out. Alternatively, a sand paper can be used for the task. This should be done until the wheels are very smooth.

  • Cut the rods while placing them in a vise at least 2 cm from their ends. They should be cut into equal lengths. File the ends of the rods cut.

  • Widen the slots on the metal rods using the jewelers file.

  • Use pliers to cut a piece of the wire latch of at least 7 mm and file the ends of the wires.

  • Glue the piece of wire to the slot in the axle to overhang the rod on one side only.
  • Put the rod with the hanging piece of wire on it through the eye hooks at the back of the mouse trap.
  • Fix a few washers on the axle on both ends. A part of the rod should be left to allow room for the wheels.
  • Push the wheels into the ends of the axle at the front side and the back as well.
  • Using the string, tie the middle of the mouse trap and make a loop to have the tip of the loose ends of the string at the back of the axle.

One can use the rubber bands to tie the rear wheels. The mouse trap car is now ready for racing.
