The Building Process

  • The size of the area will depend on the purpose of the fire pit. If the fire pit is to be used for small outdoor cooking then the size should be small. Using a stake, mark the area where the pit will be located. Attach a string containing a sharp object to the stake.
  • Using the sharp object make a circle and use some sort of powder or even flour to mark the line.
  • Remove the grass and the soil that is inside the marked circle. Using either a spade or any other digging tool, dig a trench of about 12 inches deep and 6 inches wide.
  • In the area enclosed by the circle, dig approximately six inches deep.
  • Place the blocks around the trench to see if they all fit in the circle. If they do not fit, adjust the width of the trench.
  • Remove the blocks and fill the trench with at least three inches of drainage gravel. Increase the firmness of the gravel using a hand tamper. If the gravel is not even, keep adding until the desired level is achieved.
  • Position the blocks around the dug trench. Check to see if the first block is level on both sides.
  • Add the second block and ensure it is on the same level as the first one.
  • Place the remaining blocks and in the same manner ensure they are level. If any block is not level, it can be easily adjusted using a hand hammer.
  • Using a strong adhesive, add additional blocks on top of the foundation. Add the blocks until the third or fourth course.
  • Fill the pit using gravel to up to six inches deep.
  • Wait two to three days for the fire pit to dry before using it.

Once the pit is dry, and ready for use, one should ensure that the fire is controlled and not dangerous to the environment.
