If you’ve got a keen eye for designing things and think you could be cut out for designing other people’s homes, being an interior designer may be the job you’re looking for. As an interior designer you can furnish and design
everything from industrial office complexes to model display homes for real estate companies and agents. With enough experience, you can design anything and everything that comes your way. But, how do you even get started with interior designing and are there any restrictions or permits you need to get? We’ll cover everything you need to know about becoming an interior designer in the article below.
1. First off, you’re going to want to go to school to learn the art of interior design. Some think that all you need is a good sense of style and design for different spaces, but in fact, that is probably the least important skill you’ll learn for your future job. Interior design programs are offered at almost all universities and while it may have seemed far fetched fifteen or twenty years ago, you can now obtain a bachelor’s degree in interior designing. Not only will you want to get your degree in interior design, it will be a requirement if you want to get licensed properly and advance your career in a positive direction.
2. While taking classes on interior design at your school, you will learn about different materials and fabrics and how they can collide. By collide, we don’t mean whether or not red goes well with blue, we mean that the safety of different fabrics and materials can play a big role in designing a space. You wouldn’t want to design a warehouse that deals with harmful chemicals all day and put very flammable fabrics and cloths all over the place. That’s a fire hazard waiting to happen. In addition to learning what materials are safe and job specific, you’ll also learn how to use computers to aid in the design process. Computer based interior design has become very popular and if you opt out of learning it, you could cripple yourself for future job options as most employers have moved over to computer based designing.
3. The last step in the whole process is to get your license. Most states don’t require a license to practice as an interior designer, but if you have any hopes of working for an interior design company, being licensed by your state in the field gives you a huge advantage over someone that isn’t. The NCIDQ exam, or the National Council for Interior Design Qualifications exam, is the nationally recognized standard for interior design. You’ll be tested on your knowledge of both the creative side of things and the safety side of things. Once you’ve passed your exam, you’re ready to either work an internship at a local design firm or start your own company and be well on your way to helping people live or work in a comfortable space.
