Who does not love a soft moist cake with your favorite flavor and icing on top? Cake is one of our favorite desserts. We buy and eat cakes for breakfast, snacks, after lunch or dinner, while watching television, or simply anytime, anywhere or who we are with. But have you thought about baking your own cake? Well, with the increasing prices of almost everything, why not try a homemade cake? With all the money you can save, it is worth a try. Learn how to bake a cake with these simple steps.

  1. Carefully read the recipe of the cake you plan to do. It is important that you have all the ingredients and materials needed. Once you start baking, you will most likely have a hard time to buy if you forget something. You might even end up substituting other ingredients to those that you do not have, which can possibly ruin your cake.

  2. The most usual ingredients you are going to use are eggs, milk, flour, oil, and water. Make sure all the ingredients you are going to use are kept in room temperature if not instructed. Also remember to use up eggs that are left out within 30 minutes.

  3. Prepare the right size of pan. Grease your chosen pan with a half tablespoon butter or vegetable shortening using paper towel. Be sure that the coat is thick enough to avoid breaking the cake and for it to easily come out from the pan.

  4. If you do not plan to serve the cake using the pan, use one to two tablespoons of flour and lightly shake the pan then throw excess flour. This helps in making the top flatter as the cake sticks to the sides of the pan.

  5. Ensure to stick to the instructions of the recipe. Measurements of the ingredients should be followed exactly. Mixing the ingredients should also be in the order directed in the recipe. Usually, the dry ingredients are first combined before putting in the wet ones.

  6. Preheat oven. The temperature needed can be seen in the recipe.

  7. Beat the mixture as instructed in the recipe.

  8. If all ingredients are added and the right consistency is achieved, pour the mixture until 2/3 of the pan is filled. Remember that the cake rises while baking therefore do not fully fill up the pan.

  9. Sometimes, air bubbles cannot be totally avoided but in order to lessen these, tap the pan repeatedly.

  10. Make sure to place the pan on the center rack of your oven. If you have more than one pan, they should not touch each other or even the sides of the oven.

  11. After closing the oven door, set the timer as directed in the recipe but subtract 8 minutes to give allowance. Do not open the oven door until the timer stops because this might be a reason for the cake to fall.

  12. When the timer stops, use toothpick or cake tester to see if the baking process is done or if the inside of the cake is still wet, in which case you need to heat it for an additional 4 to 5 minutes.

  13. Cool the cake for 15 to 30 minutes after removing it from the oven.

  14. In order to easily remove the cake from the pan, use a butter knife to run through the sides of the cake. Invert and lightly tap the pan as the cake loosens and eventually pops out of the pan.

  15. The cake must be completely cooled before putting frosting or icing. Have fun decorating!
