How Do I Setup a LinkSys Router?

A linkSys router takes advantage of the Wi-Fi networking capability by allowing computer systems to connect to others and also to the internet through wireless. A linkSys router allows a number of computer users to share one internet connection through wireless on the same local area network. What makes the Linksys unique as compared to other wireless devices is the ability of programmers to modify the computer code embedded in the hardware device. This means that the linkSys can be altered to allow it to support more devices or add functionality to it. There are many 3rd party projects being undertaken to make this possible.

LinkSys routers use 802.11 standards to communicate and thus offer high speed communication of up to 100 megabytes per second. When both devices connected to the Linksys router support this standard, then speeds exceeding 100Mbps could be achieved, making its use much faster than standard Ethernet devices. It has been seen as a good alternative for video streaming, playing online games and other activities that will require a lot of bandwidth use. Another advantage of the Linksys is that it is backward compatible with earlier protocols thus making the use of existing equipment possible. However, lower speeds will have to be used. There is also a 4-port Ethernet hub that helps to connect wired traditional devices. The LinkSys router also comes with a built-in firewall that supports a 256-bit encryption format making it a secure tool to use as a home network device.

To physically set up the LinkSys Router, attach the antennas appropriately to the router and plug in Ethernet cable into the port that is labeled ‘internet from the broadband internet provider. The other end of the cable should then be plugged into the Ethernet port located on the back of the computer. The LinkSys router configuration can be undertaken in to ways, either by use of the wizard or by simply starting the web browser and accessing the configuration section. Once past the login screen, one has a number of configuration options that will affect the router itself. The default settings have already been set and all one needs is just to plug it in. Thus, ensure the settings are at default. From here, the other options are largely personal preferences and will not affect the router functionality and connectivity. When everything has been set just right, then a wireless connection icon will pop up on the notification area and one is ready to access the internet in broadband mode.
