One of the greatest achievements of mankind is the invention of airplanes. From there we were able to create more types of air transportation that helped our astronomers reach the moon, create satellites, and create more advanced space shuttles. In fact, some of the wealthiest people on earth are now taking trips to the space. How cool is that? But going back, the biggest question that one may think is how can airplanes fly? Well, there’s an excellent principle behind and you’ll learn more about it here. Who knows, someday you’ll be able to create your own mini airplane even if it’s just a small toy that you can make for your kids.
Airplanes are able to fly because of the Bernoulli effect combined with transferring momentum in the air flow. The wings of the airplanes are what make the airplane maintain its altitude on air. However, not just any kind of wing will do the trick. There must be a certain shape to make that wing work for the Bernoulli effect. The wing’s cross section should be shaped such that the top of the wing offers greater distance from the leading to the trailing edge as compared to the bottom. When an airplane moves forward, there is an airflow running on top and below of the wing. Now because the top of the wing has a greater distance as compared to the bottom, the air travels farther on the top of the wing. Thus, there is much pressure atop of the wing as compared to air flow below it. That difference between the air flow and pressure above and below the wing is what makes the wing lift from an upward force. That’s how the Bernoulli effect is explained. It takes great understanding of physics in order to come up with the Bernoulli effect. When airflow runs over a greater volume a top of an object, in this case the airplane’s wings, as compared to the one below it, then a greater volume of air is expanded on top of the wing. Thus, air pressure below is greater than that above the wing.
Aside from the air pressure helping the airplane to lift, there’s also the dynamic momentum transfer that makes it possible for an airplane to fly. This one now involves the angle of the wing. When the wing is tilted correctly, it will cause the air below the wing to strike downward. The same principle is used in water skis helping a skier to not sink into the water. Newton’s law is what makes this principle work. So if you want to know more, there are a lot more detailed information you can get by researching the Internet today.
